In the back of a sleepy Starbucks, Buffalo Black smiles knowingly when I ask him about songwriting. As a rapper whose everyday self, Jamil Kelley, is an avid reader of poetry, he knows a thing or two about the topic. He was responsible for some of the most buzzed-about hip-hop from North Texas in 2013 and his recent RedPiLLwondrland Part 1 EP looks to build on that momentum.
This Sunday, hundreds will flock to the Lizard Lounge in celebration of another historic Dallas nightclub, the Red Jacket. Though its time on the Dallas nightlife scene was short, it was well-known for its hospitality, innovative approach and popularity among celebrities.
It does not take very long to notice when Miley Cyrus is in town. By 8:30 p.m. on the night of her Wednesday performance, the Orange line rail I’m using to jet to her American Airlines Center performance is alive with the sound of Bangerz. From small children in worn-out “Hannah Montana” shirts to the group of young women intensely discussing pop star antics, I’m surrounded by several generations of Cyrus fandom.
In 2013, R&B made its first stabs at reviving its cultural relevance, and hip-hop found its darker (and lighter) side. So which albums rank as the year's best? 2013 did some really excellent things for music: R&B made its first stabs at reviving its cultural relevance, hip-hop found its darker (and lighter!)
Our take on Fun Fun Fun Fest 2013 continues with this entry from Michelle Ofiwe, who arrived at the event first, and therefore had a different experience. Ofiwe’s extensive knowledge of mixtape releases and recent pop culture history is on full display in the following selection of live reviews.
Rodrigo Diaz has a plan for everything. Prompt him about his future trips across the nation, and it’s like you’re plotting a takeover. Ask him about his upcoming EP, Drone Warfare—its bleeps and bloops, carefully orchestrated drums and cyber influences—and his voice lights up. His discussions about the Dallas DJ scene feel as if he’s laying a blueprint before your eyes.
DJ Blake Ward is everywhere these days. Finding him is just a matter of time. Depending on your chosen night of debauchery, you might catch him spinning indie hits, 1980s jams, or pool-party background music. Blink once, and he’s guiding Beauty Bar’s Saturdays through its wildest dance parties, laying down bass at Ku De Ta, or running through the newest album releases.
Competition between women can be a very personal thing, but when you engage in such in a very popular, very public avenue, your intentions may no longer be your own. I have seen plenty a song get lost in the mix to overzealous fans looking for a bloodshed, and it seems that even if a femcee tries to avoid the Highlander, she may still be sucked right into it. Sometimes, if she requests that the beef itself be dropped by her fans, it may not be fulfilled. In contrast, male rappers are able to disengage quite easily from beefs.
It isn’t everyday that Radio UTD interviews a band with such a long-spanning career as the cialis cut pill Misfits, so when the iconic horror-punk crew stopped by Dallas, we were delighted to sit down with the band’s bassist, Jerry Only. Read on for his thoughts on vocal lessons, Australia, and how punk went mainstream.
I have many passions and twice as many hobbies. Among other things, I enjoy writing about music, art, history, social issues, and more. Here is a space for me to maintain and showcase some of my more favorite pieces.
